First explored by Iberville in 1699, German immigrants established St. John Parish's earliest colony in 1721 along the Mississippi River. The Acadians, driven from Nova Scotia by the British, settled a short distance upriver in 1755. Their French names, traditions and culture are strongly represented to this day. "Andouille" Capital of the World, a unique, spicy, smoked sausage made exclusively in St. John Parish.
