Mid-way between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, St. James Parish was "Sleeping Place of the Duck's" for prehistoric Indians, "First Acadian Coast" for refugees from Nova Scotia nearly 250 years ago, and "Golden Coast" for antebellum sugar cane planters.

Here the West African folktales of "Compair Lapin", better known as "Br'er Rabbit" were first recorded in America. Tours based on Laura's Memoirs detail Creole women/slaves.

Site of Valcour Aime "Little Versailles"
ca. 1799. Valcour Aime built a grand plantation, which is no longer standing, only a tangled jungle of trees & underbrush remain of the once beautiful gardens.

Felicity Plantation

Magnificent, elongated three-story plantation. Greek Revival established in 1834 as a non-sectarian college for the higher education of the sons of wealthy Louisiana planters. During the War Between the States it was used as a barracks by the Union forces. In 1864 it was given to the Roman Catholic Marist Fathers who operated it as a boarding school for boys. It now belongs to the Jesuit Order and is used for a retreat house for Laymen.
