LaSalle's expedition was attacked by Quinapisa Indians near Hahnville in 1682. Eary explorer Iberville ascended the lower Mississippi River in 1699. In 1719, German immigrants established the area which became the "Cote des Allemands", or the German Coast. Rich in muli-cultural history, St. Charles is bisected by the River and laced by swamps, bayous and lakes. Named for sixteenth century Italian Bishop Carlo Borromeo, the "Parish of Plenty" is a renown sportsman's paradise.

Old Luling Trading Post

Hall Boggs Bridge
Crosses the mighty Mississippi River at Luling & Destrehan.
One of the few cable-stayed bridges in America. East/ West Bridge Parks located beneath the span.

Esperanza Plantation
One mile west of Hale Boggs Bridge LA Hwy 18. Drive-by.
Working plantation on which sugar cane has been the principle crop grown since ca. 1763.

Bethlehem Baptist Church
14989 River Rd., Hahnville (close to Couurthouse). Drive by
Founded by African American missionaries in 1865. Original structure removed to build existing church.

St. Charles Parish Courthouse

Homeplace Plantation

LaBranche Plantation Dependency House

Main structure burned during Civil war. Creole garconniere remains. Features an original slave cabin, cafe and gift shop, a display of Arabian show horses and the grabe of Adolph Hitler's horse, Nordlicht. ca 1792.

St. Rose Tavern

A longtime landmark, the St. rose Hotel was originally built in 1922-23 to accommodate workers building the Airline Highway. 504-469-8864

Destrehan Plantation
Step back in time. Experience an authentic representation of the ante bellum era. Oldest documented house remaining in lower Mississippi Valley. Raised Creole mansion of West Indian style built in 1787, wings added in 1810. Tours daily 9:30-4pm, guided by period dressed docents. 13034 river Rd. Historical Marker. St. Charles Borromero Church & Cemetery (Little Red Church)
13396 River Rd.
First church was a log cabin built in 1710. Destroyed by fire in 1806, was rebuilt and given a coat of red paint. Thus, the "Little Red Church" became a landmark for river boats. Oldest German cemetery in the South. Oldest continuing church parish in Louisiana.

Ormond Plantation Manor

Shell/Motiva Oil refinery & River Rd. Museum at Norco
River Rd., Norco.
Museum reflects 500 years of life in the lower Mississippi river delta. Open Mon. and Wed. 1-5pm and by appointment. Admission is free. 504-465-6333.

Bonnet Carre Crevasse & Spillway
Can be seen from I-10, US 61, & LA 48. Built in 1935 by the corps of Engineers to divert Mississippi River floodwater into the Gulf via Lake Pontchartrain. Completed in 1935. Floodgates first opened in 1937, which was attended by Franklin D. roosevelt. Historical marker. Scenic overlook.
