Eary explorer Iberville ascended the lower Mississippi River in 1699. In 1719, German immigrants established the area which became the "Cote des Allemands", or the German Coast. Rich in muli-cultural history, St. Charles is bisected by the River and laced by swamps, bayous and lakes. Named for sixteenth century Italian Bishop Carlo Borromeo, the "Parish of Plenty" is a renown sportsman's paradise.

Destrehan Plantation Step back in time. Experience an authentic representation of the ante bellum era. Oldest documented house remaining in lower Mississippi Valley. St. Charles Borromero Church & Cemetery (Little Red Church) 13396 River Rd. First church was a log cabin built in 1710. Destroyed by fire in 1806, was rebuilt and given a coat of red paint. Thus, the "Little Red Church" became a landmark for river boats. Oldest German cemetery in the South. Oldest continuing church parish in Louisiana.

Bonnet Carre Crevasse & Spillway Can be seen from I-10, US 61, & LA 48. Built in 1935 by the corps of Engineers to divert Mississippi River floodwater into the Gulf via Lake Pontchartrain. Completed in 1935. Floodgates first opened in 1937, which was attended by Franklin D. roosevelt. Historical marker. Scenic overlook.
